Stabilizing 8mm footage

I am struggling to stabilize 8mm footage that doesn't always have great film frame borders, so Frame Lock doesn't seem to help that much.   All the instructional videos I've watched have had relatively consistent workable frame lines.

If I use tracking to use the Pan and Scan variety of stabilizing using the perf, I can't seem to get a great track.   Regardless of how I set the tracker, it will track for a little bit ok and then go flying off the frame somewhere.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

  • Hi Mack McLaughlin have you tried using DVO Steady 2 instead of FrameLock? Are you able to send us a clip so we can test it?

I found that sometimes a 2-step approach gets you the results you want. You could try to manually stabilize it with pan&scan first and then run that result through Framelock or Steady 2. This might help because the jumps will be smaller this way making it easier for the DVO to detect the motion and mitigate it.
